THE SWEDISH CHRISTMAS BEERS 1995
It took elven years to make the Christmas Beer a tradtion in Sweden. Before that it was very hard to produce
seasonal beers in Sweden. All beers had to be sold through the Systembolaget, and the breweries had to apply for
every brand they would like to sell. There was a limited amount of brands the Systembolaget could store so the
seasonal beers had to be left out in favour of the all-year brands.
In 1984 one of the breweries (FALCON) decided to make a try with a Christmas Beer and they released their FALCON
JULEBRYGD. It was a huge success and the Systembolaget decided to change the rules for seasonal beers. Since then
it has grown every year and this year we have 25 different Christmas Beers, 16 of them brewed in Sweden and 9 imported.
The Swedish Beer Writers Guild had their annual Christmas Beer Tasting in the beginning of November and reached
this verdict for the beers. (The points are on a scale 0-5, where 5 is a classical beer.)
